yeah... integrating guns into gates and stations would mean doubling the amount of guns for them to be able to actually hit on all sides and even then it'd be buggy...

Well, the idea itself is nice, but instead of a compass type overlay pehaps a cone-circle (depending on the degree of the scan) on the world map, originating from your ship and indicating the scan area of your directional scanner?
